From fabulous shows performed by many talented entertainers, to the sound of a slot machine spitting out quarters in a crowded casino, Las Vegas is the epitome of extravagant entertainment. For decades the bright lights have drawn us to the city, allowing us to get lost in the fun, music, and fashion inspired by icons who found a home on a prominent Las Vegas stage. Names like Sinatra, Elvis, and Liberace all call to mind specific styles associated with The Entertainment Capitol of the World.
While his piano and candelabra remain symbols of the man, Liberace will always be remembered for his extravagant costumes, a trademark he adopted to take his musical talent into the realm of showmanship. Often changing coats several times during a performance and allowing audience members on stage to admire his fashions, he took his shows from concerts to interactive musical fashion shows that displayed the opulence of his lifestyle. With a flair for clothing that drew attention, he became more than just a pianist, he became a legend.
Liberace’s flair for the extravagant is also evident in the Follies found on the Las Vegas strip. With shiny, revealing outfits highlighted by sequins and feathers, showboys and showgirls use fantastic costumes to accent acts that include dancing, music, comedy and skits. Each glint of light reflected from a glittery outfit item, draws the eye, adding pizzazz to the performance.
Combine costume elegance, magical mystery, and a touch of the wild, Siegfried and Roy brought decades of wonder to Las Vegas with their shows. Known for their love of beautiful tigers, the duo stunned audiences with magic shows involving the gorgeous creatures. Their combination of outfits ranging from simpler suits to wizard-like capes added to the mystical flair that made their shows a must-see on any Vegas vacation.
With smooth voices that drew in the high rollers and won over the hearts of the ladies, The Rat Pack sold out nearly every show they performed. With humor, charm, and style, they entertained audiences who packed in to see them perform. Dressed to the nines in fine suits, the group’s banter, energy, and talent not only filled the room, but also filled the town.
No discussion of Las Vegas would be complete without mention of Elvis Presley. The man who first performed in Las Vegas in 1956 still lives in the city, performing weddings and shows at various locations. His music made him a legend, but his styles certainly played a role in his fame. From his leather to his white suits, we know an Elvis when we see one.
Inspired by the icons found in Las Vegas, designers bring us fashions suited for a night of luxury and excitement. Adapting styles from the glorious past of the city to our modern times, our Second Life menswear fashion creators give us ways to express ourselves while we pay homage to our favorites from the show business industry. Freedoms found in SL give them the ability to adapt stage costumes to work in an every day fashion, bringing Liberace off the stage and into the ballroom or setting Siegfried free to attend a fashion show or dance at a busy club. In Second Life, our stage is everywhere and we have a costume to help us express ourselves in every way, thanks to designers who work to take inspiration from real life icons and make clothing that suits our Second Lives. To see how some of our incredible designers have used Las Vegas inspiration to create clothing that fits our virtual lifestyle, be sure to join us on Wednesday April 24th at 6pm SLT for Menswear Fashion Week’s Viva Las Vegas special show.
